Don’t look for the best people for your organisation — look for good enough 👌

It was a catchy phrase some time ago in job ads, yet I still see some companies making the same mistake of hiring the best of the best. Why doesn’t it make sense?

🧐 The best for what?

There are no people who are best in everything. Even if there are those extra talented, they will likely get bored fast in most companies.

Having super-ambitious people to whom you cannot cater will lead to lost time and money by:

- searching for the ideal candidate for months on end

- paying for the skills you don’t need

- losing the employee early due to unambitious challenges in the long run (for them)

- not having space for them to advance

❓ Ask yourself

Before an interview:

  • Who am I (really) looking for, and why?
  • What profile is good enough?
  • For what challenges is it good enough?
  • Would I choose mindset over skills in some areas?

After an interview:

  • Why should I (not) hire them?
  • Where do I see them advancing in one year?
  • What skills do they have from other roles that might be a fit?

People can also grow into skills you might need from them in the future. You may…
